A Short History

The kings of Benin were called 'Ogiso' before the last Ogiso (Ogiso Owodo) died and his son ran off. A war ensued to decide who would be the new king. Eventually, a new man came to power called Eweka. He called himself Oba, the Yoruba word for king. The new Oba dynasty had began.
